Irish Church
Monuments, 1570-1880
In the years 1970-71, as part of his research for a
post-graduate thesis at Edinburgh University, Homan visited churches all over
Ireland where he photographed and recorded sculptural wall memorials of the 17th,
18th and 19th centuries.
Many of these are by Irish sculptors, but a number were ‘imports’ from
sculptors in Britain and they include works by many of the major British and
Irish of the period. There are monuments by John Bacon, Chantrey, Cheere,
Farrell, Flaxman, Foley, Hewetson, Hogan, Kirk, MacDowell, Nollekens,
Roubiliac, Rysbrack, Scheemakers, Edward Smyth, Turnerelli, Van Nost,
Westmacott, Joseph Wilton and others. Homan’s complete archive of photos and
notes is now in the Irish Architectural Archive (www.iarc.ie)
where it is available. As Homan was principally interested in the monuments as
sculpture, he did not record inscriptions, only the names and dates of the
deceased. There is an Index to these names in Homan’s book and this Index is
reproduced below as an aide to genealogical research.
